![]() Most of the time, adding one simple "what if" to the story is more than enough. You have to change it so that everyone is talking Kangaroos with magic powers too.īut this simply isn't true. ![]() It's as if people thing it's not enough to write an alternate history of Earth where, say, the Roman empire never collapsed. They feel like if their stories only have one piece of speculation in them, they're somehow cheaping out. They think that the more weirdness the better. In my experience, a lot of people who write speculative fiction (Sci-fi, fantasy, etc) tend to make the same mistake. It was funny, well-written, and managed one of the most difficult tricks of all, which is to be ridiculous AND realistic. No more than I could jump in and do his job and be good at it.Īll that aside, I was pleasantly surprised by the book. Just because Yahtzee can be funny, clever, and witty in a five minute review, doesn't mean that he can write a funny, clever, witty novel. It's just that brilliance is not necessarily transferable. But honestly, I didn't have high expectations. When I found out that he'd written a book as well, I was curious. ![]() ![]() ![]() Like most people, I know Yahtzee primarily through his brilliantly scathing video game reviews. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reading about the different rounds kept me hooked.īut there is also a long term plot that develops slowly throughout the course of the series. The concept of an assassin competition is excellent. It opens with a punch and hooks you in instantly. I particularly love Nehemia as she’s so intelligent. The other characters in the series are also amazing. I personally think Sarah J Maas is really good at writing a captivating slow burn ‘hate at first sight’ romance. But later in the series is the most perfect, slow burn enemies to lovers romance. The first book has an amazing love triangle with great enemies to lovers romance. It’s really nice to read a female lead who knows how incredible she is. The winner will become the king’s personal assassin. And one day she is summoned by the Prince to fight in a competition. Throne of Glass follows Celaena Sardothien who is imprisoned in a horrific prison called Endovier. ![]() If you’re looking for a long series with fae, assassins and enemies-to-lovers romance. Not every adaptation needs to be done the same way, especially with Jane Austen novels where the stories have been told and retold so many times. The story itself, while not faithful to Austen's story, is well told and despite all the negative comments online has garnered some fans. The film also has chosen to format its story in quite an interesting way. So why is that? What makes this Netflix adaptation different from all other adaptations and so abhorred? Well, the film definitely modernizes the story a bit (changing things form the novel and reimagining characters, adjusting its tone while maintaining its setting) which is not particularly an issue, but can be for some fans.
